About us

Acoustic Sussex began its existence on a wet Thursday evening in Autumn 2004.  It mainly followed the death of John Smedley, the man who successfully ran Folk South East many years. To cut a long-story short, we put on our first gig in November 2004, with the excellent Clive Gregson (and Kamila Thompson, daughter of Richard and Linda Thompson, in support).  The venue was the White Hart Inn, near Ardingly, Sussex, where a packed house enjoyed great music in a lovely intimate atmosphere.  (For a review - well, pictures - follow this link: Gig review.)

Is it a folk club?

No.  Folk clubs aren't too badly represented in Sussex - although it has to be said that they are mainly in the far south of the region (see our Links page for folk club listings).  We promote acoustic or semi-acoustic singer/songwriters and other musicians, whether their music is folk, country, blues or the downright unclassifiable (don't you just hate music categories?).  Also, much as we love the folk club scene, our gigs are mainly concert-style performances.  Whilst there may be a support act and/or MC, there will not be 'floor spots' of the kind associated with the more traditional folk clubs The artists we promote will generally be established, professional artists - but as things develop, we also hope to be able to provide a platform for up and coming artists, including more local and/or amateur acts and 'open mic' type evenings.

Not for profit

Acoustic Sussex has been established as a 'not for profit' organisation - any money we make from promoting events is paid to charities. At the start of 2007, we paid £5,000 to St Catherine's Hospice at Crawley, including matching contributions from Legal & General plc.

At the start of 2008, we made a further donation of £1,500 to St Catherines and £1,500 to the MS Society's Brambles Respite Care in Horley. In its News Release, spokesman Peter Spencer says "Our main aim is quite simply to put on great quality live music events but as a non-profit voluntary organisation, any money we make from our programme is paid to charity. Donations of £1,500 each (including matching donations from Legal & General Group plc) have been made to the MS Society's Brambles Respite Care Centre in Horley and to St Catherine's Hospice in Crawley.
